Google Combat. K.O. Facebook?
OpenSocial is a set of three common APIs, defined by Google with input from partners, that allow developers to access core functions and information at social networks:
* Profile Information (user data)
* Friends Information (social graph)
* Activities (things that happen, News Feed type stuff)
See this post on Techcrunch for all the details.
Now the big news is , who are the players joining in? The Google Opensocial umbrella has already raked in Salesforce, LinkedIn, Ning, Hi5, Plaxo, Friendster, Viadeo and Oracle besides its own social networking Giant -Orkut. Add to that another Godzilla cum King Kong of Social Networking websites-MySpace. Yes, MySpace is also joining the league.
The Opensocial API goes live tonite with the Orkut Sandbox. Wanna check out the first Google Campfire details where the masters revealed it all(almost). Go here
An inside pic of the event:
OpenSocial has access to 200 million users of social networks as of tonight. Apparently, Google is in talks with even Facebook. Hmm, the Google pie seems delicious now. I'm still waiting for Opensocial to score it big.It's human nature to cheer for the underdog. I don't know who's side I'm on. May the better social networker win!!! Or may we all connect better. That's a better wish.
