7 HDD for your Mac

I went flickr browsing and I found this. Pretty amazing.7 hard drives connected to one Mac Book.
Have a surprising look. The question here is , what can 7 hard drives do which a single 500 GB external HDD can't? I'm still on my soul-searching mode.
